As the conversations expand into the ideas of work-life balance, self-care and flexible work schedules, I opted to fully embrace these concepts in my life and business. Time is the key factor. Time to focus on learning more about my clients, what drives them, and what they want. Time to build relationships, connections, and trust. My clients are not a number or a transaction. I understand that finances and tax returns are personal to each of us.
I’m embracing the virtual office. Here you can expect software that keeps up with the current technologies, electronic organizers and e-signatures. Secure client portals allow for the quick transfer of information, access to stored documents, and online payment of invoices all in one place.
Online meetings will save time for everyone, but when the need arises, I’ll be meeting clients at their home or office. While I don’t have a formal office or set work schedule, my goal is to respond within a 24-hour period. The world is constantly changing, let’s embrace it together.
I started my career working for a small-town CPA part time while in high school. The work was done by hand using green ledger sheets and your best friend was a pink pearl eraser. After graduating from Montana State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, I did auditing for 6 months before taking a private accounting position.
Life events then brought me to Vancouver, WA. I moved back into public accounting, taking a position with a local CPA firm in 1997. The sale of the business caused a transition of my position to a tax firm in 2018. My duties started with bookkeeping, quickly moved to commercial tax, and ended with overseeing the operations of the tax department. Over the years, I’ve worked with talented individuals and mentors who allowed me to learn and grow. The result is 30 plus years of experience as a CPA with an additional 6 years in bookkeeping. A unique combination that gives me the ability to see things from a client’s perspective.
Along with my CPA experience, I was part owner of a real estate and property management company for 17 years. I did all the accounting for this entity along with the rental accounting for the property owners. I’ve been in the shoes of the business owner. I understand the frustrations and challenges small businesses face daily.
My goal is to continue to learn, focusing on best practices for not only my business, but also for my clients.
Outside of work, you can find me traveling to see family, creating some crazy quilting project, outside enjoying all the Pacific Northwest has to offer, or enjoying the arts including Broadway productions, museums and galleries.
